The traditional Jewish wedding ceremony offers a grand
opportunity to witness some of the most meaningful
Jewish customs which praises the Holy Communion
between a man and woman, who become husband and
wife.
The rituals symbolize the beauty of this holy union between the chatan (Hebrew for groom) and kallah (bride), who is encouraged to look beyond their material comforts and seek peace and happiness in their own religious, spiritual and moral values, as they prepare to walk into the future. Be it a
Jewish Christian or a Jewish catholic wedding, the traditional rituals starting from the Yom Kippur (wedding day) to the breaking the glass, Jewish wedding is a grand occasion – full of fun, holiness, purity, religiosity and giving of beautiful Jewish wedding gifts.
According to Jewish tradition, all past mistakes of both the chatan and kallah are forgiven. Both of them fast through out the day.
The fast is broken only after the wedding ceremony is completed. During the
Jewish wedding ceremony, the chatan wears a kittel, the traditional white robe worn on Yom Kippur. Kabbalat Panim is the name of Jewish wedding ceremony receptions held before the wedding. While the chatan and kallah are not allowed to meet for a week before the wedding, during the ceremony, they are given royal treatments. The kallah is seated on a throne while the chatan is surrounded and eulogized by singers who chant the Jewish wedding songs. One of the rituals of a Jewish wedding ceremony is that both the mothers of the groom and the bride break a plate – symbolizing togetherness – just as a broken plate can not be put together, a broken relationship also can not be mended. Just like Rebecca had covered her face before marrying Isaac, the groom also puts a veil across the bride’s face, symbolizing modesty and purity of character. This ritual is called Badeken. The
Jewish wedding ceremony is always held outdoors, under a canopy called chupah symbolizing protection and home, which is to be shared by the couple. Neither the bride nor the groom wears any jewelry at this time, symbolizing the importance of soul and heart over material happiness.
